Our 'Maths and Sport: Countdown to the Games' project was funded by grants from the Nuffield Foundation, the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851, and the award of the Gresham Prize by Gresham College. We are very grateful to all for their generous support.
The Nuffield Foundation is a charitable trust working to improve social well-being through education, research and innovation. Also inspired by London 2012, the Foundation developed a set of cross-curricular STEM activities for 11-14 year olds, Nuffield STEM Games.
Founded in 1597, Gresham College is London’s oldest Higher Education Institution. Gresham College has provided free public talks within the City of London for over 400 years. To celebrate the London 2012 Games, Gresham College has organised a series of free public lectures on Mathematics and Sport, given by Professor John D Barrow. Videos of past lectures can be viewed online.
First established to stage the Great Exhibition in 1851, the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 offers major awards to scientists and engineers for research, development and design and Special Awards, such as the grant given to this Maths and Sport project, to 'increase the means of industrial education' in Britain. Its aims are to support education for the benefit of productive industry.
